Panel Discussion on Advancing Women’s Political Participation as a Tool to Enhance Gender Equality

The Arab Women Organization, in collaboration with the Ministry of Solidarity, Social Inclusion and Family of the Kingdom of Morocco and UNDP, is holding an international Panel as a side event to the 2022 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, to discuss the progress and continued obstacles to women’s participation in the Arab States.
The zoom seminar will be held on Friday, July 15, 2022, at 13:00 New York time, and will last 90 minutes.
 
The virtual panel is aimed at bringing together governments and civil society around a discussion on the status of women’s political participation in the Arab States, on the progress in the region and the continued obstacles, and the necessary measures to accelerate progress towards achieving the various commitments around women’s political participation. The high-level panel is expected to give renewed momentum to this important topic for the region.
The side event will be an opportunity to raise awareness and interest in the efforts of various elements of society to promote women’s political participation and discuss avenues for effective cooperation and collaboration between government and non-government entities towards accelerating progress in this area. It will consist of a high-level panel of government representatives, UN entities, civil society with interactive discussions with the participants.

Ma'ani Bint Abdullah bin Hamad al-Busaidieh, Director-General of Family Development at the Ministry of Social Development of Oman, President of the Executive Council of the Arab Women Organization, H.E. Dr. Salma Al-Nems, Secretary General of the Jordanian National Committee for Women's Affairs, Member of the Executive Council of the Arab Women Organization, H.E. Dr. Yusra Karim Mohsen, Director-General of the Iraqi Women's Empowerment Department- General Secretariat of the Iraqi Cabinet, Member of the Executive Council of the Arab Women Organization, H.E. Minister/Awatif Hayar, Minister of Solidarity, Social Inclusion and Family of the Kingdom of Morocco, Member of the Executive Council of the Arab Women Organization, Dr. Khaleda Bouzar, Regional Director of the Office of Arab States of the United Nations Development Programme UNDP, H.E. Ambassador Alexandra Redmark, Swedish Government Ambassador to Jordan, H.E. Ambassador Cheikh Niang, Permanent representative of Senegal to the UN,   H.E. Ambassador Alicia Poinerostro, Deputy Permanent representative of Mexico to the UN.  
Dr. Mostura al-Shammari, Saudi Arabia, President of the Women's Committee of the Arab Parliament, Dr. Huda Al-Muhaza, Kingdom of Bahrain, President of the Women's Committee of the Arab Lawyers Union, Mrs. Ruwaida Hamada, Lebanese Republic, Expert on Gender Issues, Dr. Najia Hashmi, Regional Electoral Policy Specialist, Global Election Project, UNDP, will also participate in the discussions. 
The panel will be moderated by Dr. Fadia Kiwan, Director-General of the Arab Women Organization.
